Can your business bounce into action for the latest underground craze in team bonding and networking?

Ping Pong Fight Club, the world’s greatest inter-company ping pong tournament and Tsingtao, the world’s second biggest beer brand (pronounced Ching Dow), are calling for maverick businesses in London to roll their sleeves up and rise to the challenge on May 18th 2017.

Businesses can register to take part in this lively night of teambuilding and networking, with competitive ping pong and beer thrown in for good measure. The event is being held from 5.30pm at a secret location in central London and registration takes place at www.pingpongfightclub.co.uk  …. full details will be revealed to companies when they sign up.

Not for the faint hearted and not open to the general public, Ping Pong Fight Club mimics the underground feel of Fight Club the movie with an eight-table ‘fighting arena’ and the location will only be revealed to participating businesses shortly before the event.

Ping Pong Fight Club will be a tour de force of inter-company ping pong rivalry, as businesses compete for the bragging rights against a backdrop of DJs, MCs, pop-up bars, social zones and Tsingtao’s famous Beer Pong Championship. Attracting the biggest names in media and digital firms, previous teams have included Facebook, Spotify, Expedia, Ticketmaster and Deliveroo.

Only 16 companies can take part in the London event, with 64 players in total (four players from each company), playing to become the ultimate Ping Pong Fight Club champion, who will then go on to compete in an overall UK final against winners from Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow.

Around the ping pong action, friendly ‘grudge’ matches and robot challenges will take place in surrounding social zones. Face painters will be on hand to draw company logos and tribal colours, while DJs and live MCs will hype up the guests for the battles ahead as they tuck into great food and Tsingtao Beer and soak up the Ping Pong Fight Club atmosphere.

James Wright, for Tsingtao Beer, says: “Tsingtao Beer is excited to partner with Ping Pong Fight Club, because it’s a world away from the usual team building, networking and corporate nights out. Everyone can have a go at table tennis and we want to encourage all types of businesses, from start-ups to well established industry leaders, to get involved. This event always gets such a great response from staff – from the ultra-competitive to the non-sporty types. Some companies invite their competitors too, as it’s the perfect way to throw down the gauntlet in a fun and social way.”

There are participation packages to suit every company’s budget, with a Rookie package for start-ups, to a Champions package for global brands. Guests will receive complimentary drinks on arrival – including Tsingtao Beer – as well as company-branded T-shirts and wristbands, keyrings, professional pictures and videos for companies to promote their involvement after the event.

There are also huge prizes up for grabs – not just for the winning team, but also through an online charity raffle, which last year included brand new professional table tennis tables, camera drones and GoPros.

History repeats itself after more than 50 years as  Le Mans Aston Martin Racing cars go back to the Hotel de France
The town of La Chartre-sur-le-Loir once again echoed to the roar of high speed racing engines last week when Aston Martin Racing cars returned after a gap of some 52 years.

From 1953 until 1963 the Hotel de France at La Chartre-sur-le-Loir was the base of the Aston Martin team for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Drivers and mechanics would prepare their cars in the hotel’s courtyard and then drive them on public roads to the famous circuit – now history has repeated itself.

After two days of testing at the Le Mans circuit, three of this year and Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GTEs and their drivers, Darren Turner, Richie Stanaway and Mathias Lauda, recreated some of the famous photographs and film footage from the 1950’s.

The Hotel de France in  association with motor sport and the Le Mans 24-hour race started when John Wyer, a hard-nosed straight talking Aston Martin team manager, discovered it in 1952 and then based his teams there.

Every year hundreds of local people and motorsport enthusiasts would gather in the small French town to catch a glimpse of the cars and see them leave for Le Mans, filming and taking photographs of the drivers and cars.

In 1959, the hotel saw its first victory party, the first of many, when the Aston Martin DBR1, driven by Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori, won the race for the Aston Martin team managed by the legendary Wyer.

Since then, many teams have used the hotel, which has become a mecca for motoring enthusiasts from around the world, but the Aston Martin team had never been back.
Last week saw the cars leave the famous hotel before returning to Le Mans to prepare for this year’s race, which takes place on 13-14 June.

Martin Overington, owner of the hotel, which he purchased and refurbished last year, said: “This is one of the biggest events that has ever taken place at the hotel. It is literally history repeating itself and we are delighted to be welcoming the racing cars, their drivers and of course David Richards, the Chairman of Aston Martin Racing”

David Richards, Chairman of Aston Martin Racing, said: The  Hotel de France is an important part of Aston Martin’s  motorsport heritage, having been the team and Le Mans base for many years in the late 1950s, including 1959 when the team won the 24-hour race. This year, we wanted to recreate the nostalgia of those days, when the racing cars had their final preparations alongside the hotel before being driven some 40km to the circuit along public roads.

The Aston Martin Racing team will have a five-car entry at Le Mans this year, equal to its largest ever entry two years ago. Three Vantage GTEs will compete in in the GTE Pro class with two in GTE Am.   Aston Martin Racing is the reigning GTE Am champion and is looking to both retain this title as well as taking Pro honours too.

Le Mans is also round three of the FIA World Endurance Championship and Aston Martin Racing is currently leading the GT Manufacturers and championship. With Le Mans counting for double points, a good result is important if the team is to keep on course for its first coveted WEC Manufacturers title.  When asked by Chelsea Monthly, what the prospects of double points will be.. Their response “Watch this space”.  Classic!

Where professional sportsmen are used to fielding criticism that they’re just one-trick ponies, every now and again someone comes along to score a beauty out of nowhere. That could be a fitting description for Chelsea and England star Frank Lampard – after all, the 35-year-old has now successfully entered a new sphere… in writing children’s stories.

In his five-book series of Frankie’s Magic Football – the third of which, Frankie  vs The Cowboy’s Crew, has just been published – readers are whisked away on adventures with the titular schoolboy hero, his friends, and pet dog Max, taking part in a real-life Fantasy Football League against the most unlikely teams from extraordinary times and places.

“I came up with the idea while reading and watching TV with the kids,” the 35-year-old smiles. “I thought there wasn’t really anything out there that was football-based, educational and fun. I was 29 or 30 then, and I had a lot going on in my football career, but as you get older you get more time and you start to think about different things. You think about life after football, so it was a great sideline for me at that point.”

And so Lampard, already a role model to millions of children worldwide, is now encouraging them to fulfil their literary, as well as sporting, ambitions too. “I wanted to make it football, but I wanted to make it educational as well so there’s a moral lesson in there for the kids, and the way they are travelling backwards and forwards there is a historical lesson in there too,” he enthuses.

“I think there is an element as a footballer where you can use a bit of your influence and use it in a positive way, and this is something I have put a lot of time into doing, and I think for the right reasons.”

Lampard, who is engaged to Christine Bleakley, has two daughters from a previous relationship. He makes a point of reading with his kids regularly. “I think I am a pretty relaxed parent, but it is one thing where I do try to get them to read, as I find it’s a great way of focusing their minds. Anyone who reads can take a lot of knowledge and satisfaction from it.”christine

Keeping them grounded is another challenge. “Yes, you live and learn as you go along when you’re a parent. I try to just keep their feet on the ground. I never spoil them, and it is very important that they learn the basics of money, of respect, of manners. I’d hate for somebody to look at them and say ‘they are spoilt little brats’. That’s my biggest nightmare!”

As a family man, Lampard is happiest when he’s surrounded by his loved ones. “When we won the Champions League in Munich, my family and Christine’s family had two days in Munich before the final. That Munich trip was the most amazing two days of my sporting life – it was really special for me. We had a big party in the hotel after the match and all my family and friends came there. We stayed up all night and when you look back, it was the complete moment. When I look back on my career, that will always be a special moment. It was incredible.”

Footballers often rely on that support around them, and Lampard is no different. “At any level in England there are pressures, and if you have a bit of a bad game, you will get criticised,” he nods. “That comes with the territory. And that is when you need to go home and have people there for you. My family and Christine have always been there for me.”

Still, with a career that’s seen more highs than lows, Lampard knows how lucky he’s been. “Looking back, I feel pretty fortunate,” he smiles. With England I had some tough times; with Chelsea it’s all been pretty good. There haven’t been too many bad times and that’s what we like to hear at Chelsea Monthly magazine. Let the good times roll. Hopefully, Lampard will get into some books for grown ups too after his finished with his JK Rowling ambition!!

Last Thursday on Velaa Private Island in the Maldives, the Two-time Major Champion and Ryder Cup legend, José María Olazábal visits the all new ‘Academy Deluxe’ on Maldivian Paradise Island invited with the designer of the island by the developers to unveil one of golf’s most captivating new projects. The new Velaa Golf Academy by Olazábal has been created in collaboration with the golfing legend and features a stunning golf course and academy. The all-encompassing facility sits proudly amidst an exclusive private island in the Maldives that is home to 48 private pool villas, located in the northern part of the Noonu Atoll, just north of Malé. Velaa Private Island was born out of the passion for the region of owner, Jiri Smejc and his wife Radka, and their desire to create the “most Private place on earth”.

José María, who has achieved the highest accolades in the world of golf, was selected by Velaa Private Island’s ownership as the designer of the unique deluxe academy that will take centre stage in the island’s array of recreational attractions. The golf course has been crafted to give guests the option to fine tune their game as well as relax and enjoy the experience created by Olazábal’s acclaimed design team.

“I have never seen such a luxurious location,” remarked Olazábal on his visit to Velaa Private Island today.

“I have  had the pleasure of working on some remarkable projects, but what Jiri and Radka have created here is simply awe-inspiring.”

The golf course itself has been designed with iron play very much in mind, a key strength of the Spaniard’s game during his prolific career as a notoriously accurate short and mid-iron player.

“We were given the opportunity to design something completely unique here at Velaa and our clear aim was to integrate the island’s charm and character into the Golf Academy,” elaborated the Major Champion & Ryder Cup legend. “Through careful use of the landscape guests can hit all the shots imaginable, from mid-irons to wedges and short-game. With six greens and nine tees we have been able to also create an exciting & challenging 9-hole Par 3 layout. Together with the high-tech Swing studio, complete with all the latest gadgets, golf enthusiasts will have the chance to refine all aspects of their game in the idyllic surroundings. In short, practise in paradise”

During a site visit with the management team from Velaa Private Island and Troon’s team of agronomy and operational experts, Olazábal stopped to hit some shots to demonstrate how his vision has been realised and showcase his much talked about touch around the greens.

The golfing legend hits the ceremonial tee-shot at the official opening of his Velaa Golf Academy by Olazabal“I wanted the experience to be appealing for both young and old, beginners and experts. We hope visitors to the island will be inspired by what we have created and the experience enhances their enjoyment of the game that I am so passionate about,” exclaimed the Spaniard.

The course comprises 6 immaculately conditioned green complexes; all surrounded by uniquely shaped bunkering and eye-catching water features. 9 tee options give guests a range of hole choices at a variety of lengths, with the option for guests to book private tuition and reserve the academy for exclusive use at select times.

“José María’s distinct style & passion for the game was part of the reason he was chosen as our designer. Velaa is one of the world’s most distinguished destinations, and stands out from traditional resorts. We wanted to get the match between what the island stands for and the character of the golf course. Renowned for his crisp ball striking and fierce touch around the greens, the golf course personifies José María and is befitting of Velaa,” commented Hans Cauchi, General Manager & Executive Director.

Regarded as one of the world’s most exclusive experiences, quintessentially Maldivian with uncompromised luxury, the paradise island has already made its mark on international high end travellers. Operated by renowned international golf management leaders, Troon Golf, Velaa Private Island is committed to delivering only the finest golf experience for its guests.

The immaculately conditioned Troon Managed Velaa Golf Academy by Olazabal

“Velaa is without doubt one of the finest developments we have ever seen and represents the definition of luxury perfectly,” commented Bruce Glasco, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, Troon International Operations. “We have all been impressed by José María and his team’s unwavering attention to detail throughout the design phase and have no doubt that it has the potential to attract guests from far and wide. To have such an inspirational figure as the designer matches the unequivocal commitment shown by the ownership in delivering a resort destined for iconic status.”
