Dame Mary Berry Celebrates the Opening of the Oudolf Landscape at RHS Garden Wisley
Dame Mary Berry, one of Britain’s most beloved cooks and an RHS Ambassador, officially opened the newly redesigned Oudolf Landscape at RHS Garden Wisley. The grand opening coincided with the borders reaching their peak in their first growing season, offering a stunning display of Piet Oudolf’s signature planting style.
To mark the occasion, Dame Mary added the final flourish to a 1.5m floral cake, featuring over 1,000 blooms, including hydrangeas, dahlias, sedum, and zinnias. The spectacular cake was crafted by renowned florist Simon Lycett, incorporating sustainable British flowers and plants that reflect Oudolf’s passion for perennials such as echinacea and achillea.
About the Oudolf Landscape
The redesigned Oudolf Landscape, situated between the Viewing Mount and The Glasshouse at RHS Garden Wisley, transforms Piet Oudolf’s original borders from over 20 years ago into a vibrant, immersive experience. Visitors are invited to explore a sinuous path that winds through 3,000m² of planting, featuring over 36,000 perennials and 162 plant varieties, including:
- Echinacea purpurea
- Salvia nemorosa
- Stipa gigantea
- Centaurea montana
- Shrubs such as Syringa pekinensis (Peking lilac) and Aesculus parviflora (Bottlebrush buckeye)
The design encourages visitors to take their time, relax, and draw inspiration for their own gardens, while also creating a seamless connection between RHS Wisley’s Rock Garden, Arboretum, and Glasshouse.
A Vision for Learning and Inspiration
Piet Oudolf’s vision for the landscape focuses on naturalistic planting combinations designed to excite, inspire, and educate visitors. The Oudolf Landscape provides not only aesthetic beauty but also benefits wildlife throughout the year.
Peter Jones, Garden Manager at RHS Garden Wisley, commented:
“Even in its first flowering season, the Oudolf Landscape is stunning. Its changing colours and textures offer a spectacular display, while also providing year-round benefits for wildlife. Visitors are sure to leave inspired, ready to recreate a piece of this border at home.”
