Tea Education Begins…

Tea, with its curious medicinal properties, is a chameleon of sorts. Each variety and blend of tea comes from one plant, the camellia sinensis plant. Although it may be instinctive to gravitate towards the more common Earl Grey or English Breakfast, there are other tea varieties that may suit your tastes.

Harney & Sons has an array of delicious tea blends that anyone can enjoy and their customer service is close to unbeatable. A couple of months ago, a friend of mine received a Harney & Sons order with a note addressed to them. It was an apology letter indicating that the tin that was normally used for one of the teas was unavailable, thus another tin was used. Their attention to detail and care for their customers has made me forever faithful.

For the best cup, I would recommend getting loose-leaf tea and placing it in a pot with a strainer; the space will allow the leaves to expand and grow, leaving you with the flavour the tea is meant to provide.

Here are three well-deserving blends:

Rose Scented

Here is an aromatic black tea that will leave you caffeinated and calm. It is a blend of large leaf Ceylon and Keemun and is scented with rose oil and rosebuds. This tea is perfect for a morning cup. The rose goes well with honey or brown sugar and a touch of milk. I have also found that lavender honey is an ideal compliment.

Wenshan Baozhong

This fragrant oolong is ideal for an afternoon lift. It does not have as much caffeine as black tea  so you need not worry about a sleepless night. This oolong is delicate and needs to be carefully watched, so be sure not to over-steep the tea. I recommend using filtered water for this type due to its light and pure flavour. It is most delicious on its own but if you must have it sweetened, honey would be best.

Paris

This black tea, blended in admiration of the city it was named after, is a combination of smooth caramel and vanilla flavours. The lemony Bergamot not only lends an aromatic advantage, but it is known for its antidepressant properties. Due to its fruity flavour, this tea is perfect unsweetened.
