How do you take back control of your gut?

Trying to eat well, exercise regularly, keep stress levels as low as I can, and of course taking Symprove!

Although Symprove Ltd was launched in 2002. Your history dates back to 1986 with Barry SMITH. Can you give us a brief history of the brand from the very routes in 1986 up until now?

Barry Smith (my father!) was a farmer in 1986 and unhappy with existing animal feed so he developed his own feed based on germinated grains.  After witnessing the impact of this on his animals, Barry was encouraged to take the technology to people. The seeds of Symprove were sown!  Cool fact – Symprove is still made on the farm where I grew up.

What is the difference between good and bad bacteria?

So, the gut has both good and bad bacteria.  Good bacteria are bacteria known to have a positive impact on health. An imbalance between good and bad bacteria may have a negative impact.

What is the science behind Symprove and how can it improve your health?

Several scientific studies have been carried out on Symprove and studies published so far include:

  • Effective delivery system – survival of the Symprove bacteria through the Gastrointestinal tract
  • Gut function and how this is impacted by the use of multistrain live bacteria products
  • Emerging research – The impact of Symprove on other components of the microflora and implications for the maintenance of human health

What is the Microbiome?

Your microbiome is a massive ecosystem made of up trillions of organisms such as bacteria, yeasts, fungi & viruses that live in your digestive tract. Collectively these weigh up to 2kg – that’s heavier than the average human brain!

Your microbiome lives in harmony with you. Take care of it, and it’ll take care of you.

Although scientists are only beginning to understand the role of the microbiome, it is believed to assist in:

  • The breakdown of complex carbohydrates
  • Producing vitamins and minerals
  • Producing short-chain fatty acids
  • Defending against pathogens
  • Training our immune system
  • Supporting detoxification

What feeds the gut microbiome?

Everything we eat feeds our gut microbiome. A varied diet with different food types is recommended as can lead to a more diverse microbiome which is considered to be a healthy one.

What factors influence an individual gut microbiome?

Good diet, sleep patterns, and exercise are thought to have a positive effect on the microbiome and leave us feeling happier and healthier. Other activities such as playing outside and exposure to animals and dirt help balance the good and bad bacteria within your microbiome. But, nobody’s perfect. Modern lifestyles mean we can’t always do everything we’re supposed to. Live bacteria supplements can help support the gut microbiome in the context of a healthy diet & lifestyle.

What has been one of your highlight moments for the brand in the past few years?

For me, it will always be hearing from our customers and the positive effect Symprove has on their lives.
