An escape to exercise and energise, plus, feel grounded and elevated at the same time.
Practising yoga in London comes in many shapes and forms, from candle-lit to aerial, but there’s one thing you can’t find in the city — being surrounded with mountains and waterfalls and breathing in crystal-clear air.
In the French Alps though — it’s a completely different story.
I was fortunate to attend an eight-day wellness retreat in the French Alps and enjoy a combination of yoga and hiking. Plus, even tried paragliding, which was terrifying at first, but unforgettable at last. The entire retreat, however, was much more than breathtaking views and adorable Alpine animals. I’ve never felt so grounded yet elevated before.
The holiday was organised by Adventure Yogi, and it was one of their several retreats they host in and out of the UK, including places like Ibiza and Norfolk. The chalet is only a 20-minute drive from Saint Bourg Maurice train station, so you can either arrive by train or, if you choose to fly in to Geneva, there’s a 3-hour flight transfer to the accommodation. Arriving to the chalet in Sainte Foy, around 2,200 feet in the mountains, peaks and valleys welcomed us as we settled in our en suite rooms.
Besides the obvious difference of the scenery from London, two of the biggest advantages of being at such high altitudes are the clarity of the air and the fresh taste of water. And, as the snowy slopes of the French Alps turn into blooming mountain trails and Azul blue glacial lakes, what once was a ski paradise in the winter became a hiking haven in the summer.
The meditative effects of yoga are commonly known, but did you know that hiking is a very efficient stress reliever as well? Studies have shown that walks in nature boost mood, decrease stress levels and help fight depression and anxiety. So, sitting down with your legs crossed isn’t the only way to switch off. Wondering around these beautiful mountains might just help you leave all your worries behind.
Two of the main activities during the retreat were hiking and yoga to exhilarate and energise our getaway. There’s a 90-minute empowering yoga session before breakfast to get us ready for the day then a restorative practice in the evening before dinner to stretch and unwind after the daily hike.
Each day, we visited a different city or ski destination and hiked in the surrounding mountains. At the highest point, we could even see the snow-capped Mount Blanc. Amidst the slight breeze and the sound of our footsteps, every now and again we’d notice the sound of bells coming from goats or cows munching on their lunch off the trails. And if we were quiet enough, we could even spot a few marmots hiding nearby. Plus, one early morning there’s hike up high in the mountains for sunrise yoga and meditation. A 5 a.m. alarm might sound too extreme on vacation, but it’s well worth it. Doing yoga during sunrise in nature is really powerful. It changed the way I practise yoga and meditation and helped me better understand what mindfulness meant and how to get the most out of it.
The intensity of both the yoga and the hikes suit all fitness levels, but none of the programmes are mandatory. If one of the days you’d like a little more R&R, you could sign up for a massage, relax in the hammock or enjoy the outdoor hot tub or sauna.
If you’re up for a little more adrenaline, however, you can choose from a variety of exciting activities such as paragliding, wild water rafting and hydrospeeding. Flying sounded just about right for me. I’ve always wanted to experience what that feeling of flying freedom’s like, so I signed up for paragliding and it was incredible — scary but super fun.
Would I go again? Without a doubt! Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or just looking for a getaway that’s more than sightseeing and reading a book on the beach, this retreat will not disappoint. It keeps an ideal balance between recreation and relaxation and adventure and mindfulness.
There are six weeks of holidays this summer from July 18 to August 29. Prices range from £989pp to £1294.

Cocktails have become one of the most popular drinks, with venues serving more than ever before. But no longer are standard cocktails enough – us cocktail connoisseurs want flamboyance, drama, and, above all, intense flavour.

To create the perfect cocktail each ingredients must work in harmony with one another. The sometimes forgotten element – the mixer – can make or break a cocktail, so it’s imperative this is chosen with as much consideration as the spirits and garnishes. Franklin & Sons products were first introduced in 1886 – right here in London. Rapidly establishing themselves as experts in creating authentic, high-quality recipes made from delicious hand-picked
ingredients, the Franklin & Sons range of soft drinks became an instant hit. The range contains only natural flavours, extracts, and colours, with absolutely no preservatives or sweeteners and works excellently as a standalone soft drink and deliver brilliantly as a mixer for premium spirits. What’s more, each of the seven flavours boasts a tertiary food-led ingredient to unlock additional flavours in the drink – while also making food pairing simple.

Available across the capital in places such as Apero at The Ampersand Hotel and the Royal Garden Hotel, Franklin & Sons has built a reputation amongst bartenders as one of the most versatile ranges available today. Used in a variety of cocktails in some of the most exclusive bars and restaurants, the Franklin & Sons drinks are an integral part of countless serves in London. One of our favourite cocktails of the moment has been developed by the bar team at the Aqua Shard. Using the refreshing Franklin & Sons Wild Strawberry & Scottish Raspberry and Cracked Black Pepper soft drink, the team created the Apple of My Eye, a light and refreshing drink that tantalises the senses:
40ml Sipsmith Gin
25ml Teichenne Green apple
15ml Kalamansi juice
Top up Franklin and Sons Wild Strawberry and Scottish Raspberry with Cracked Black Pepper (about
100ml)

Cocktails were once solely reserved for days and evenings out, but nowadays it’s not uncommon for cocktail lovers to recreate their favourite cocktails at home.
Just like with bars, it’s important budding mixologists get all the ingredients right when building cocktails to drink at home. And the mixer is just as important as the chosen spirits to unlock the flavours.

Our seven-strong range, which contains delightfully summery drinks, such as Cloudy Apple & Yorkshire Rhubarb with Cinnamon, Sicilian Lemonade & English Elderflower with Crushed Juniper , and Valencian Orange & Pink Grapefruit with Lemongrass, contains a tertiary food-led ingredient –the only range on the market we know of to do so – give the drink depth and offer a more complex flavour, all while helping with food pairing.

At home
Available to buy in Harrods and online retailers such as ginkiosk.com, the Franklin & Sons soft drinks
offer a premium quality cocktail ingredient for any occasion. Those who purchase one of our special
750ml sharing serves this summer – which are perfect for summer parties – will receive an exclusive
free gift courtesy of the Royal Horticultural Society.

Toni & Guy is one of the most successful brands to come out of the hairdressing industry. With more than 475 salons across 48 countries, CEO, OBE and co-founder Toni Mascolo and his brother Guy started TONI&GUY back in 1963 with a single salon in Clapham, London. The company expanded successfully through the ingenious creativity, quality and exciting marketing strategy.

‘Early Days’

Having arrived in England from their native Italy in the 1950’s, The Mascolo family settled in Clapham, South London, with eldest sons Toni and Guy both following their father’s footsteps into hairdressing.

A celebrated hairdresser himself, Francesco Mascolo had taught all of his sons to cut hair from an early age and despite Toni’s interest in academic studies and a desire to pursue a career in law, his move to London put an end to that dream and Toni began working as his father’s assistant in a busy London salon.

Toni soon realised how much he enjoyed working as a hairdresser and continued to work alongside his father building a large clientele at Viccari’s salon in Cox Street, Mayfair. When this salon was sold, Francesco secured a place at the award-winning Renato’s in Dover Street, where Guy his younger son joined him to fulfill his apprenticeship.

Following three days of unemployment (the only such period in his lifetime), a young Toni Mascolo grew a moustache to create a more ‘mature’ appearance and became the manager of South London salon, Gerard’s, at just 16. Always keen to better himself, it wasn’t long before Toni moved back to Victoria Street, near Westminster, enjoying a high profile clientele and working gruelling fourteen-hour-long days in an effort to save enough money to buy his mother a house of her own. Meanwhile, Guy moved back to South London where his talent saw him headhunted to join busy Clapham salon, Cecile Moss.

12th December 1962 saw the tragic loss of their beloved mother and the realisation for Toni and Guy that they would now have to support their father and three younger brothers, the youngest of which, Anthony, was just five years old.

In 1963 Guy was offered the opportunity to take over the salon where he worked. Despite the huge risk involved, Toni elected to leave his well-paid job in a central London salon to join his brother in Clapham, though it would mean abandoning the large, loyal client base he had built.

In January 1963 the first TONI&GUY salon opened its doors and the brothers worked hard to build the business. With a large rent to pay, it was a struggle to survive. Having inherited some busy stylists from the original salon, including a young Pauline O’Donnell (later to be Mascolo, when she marries Toni in 1970), helped to boost the salon’s business, which quickly gained momentum. The brothers’ early promotional activity included leaflet drops in the local area advertising their ‘Italian style’.

A time of extreme change in youth culture, the 1960’s saw an explosion in fashion as attitudes were changing. TONI&GUY offered a unisex service in contrast to the traditional culture of salons and barbershops that were unable to cope with the new graphic shapes for women and men’s longer styles. By the end of 1964 the salon was fully booked and the brothers realised that they were destined for bigger things.

Fast forward to 2010, Toni & Guy where already a force to be reckoned with dominating the entire global sphere and most recommended amongst hairdressers and the industry as a whole.

TONI&GUY further cemented its fashion credentials as the partnership with the British Fashion Council continued to develop throughout the decade.  Toni Mascolo continued to expand the salon network, adding new territories to the ever-expanding global presence. The launch of a new salon group, essensuals London, also saw Toni establish his first franchise salons in North America – with doors opening in New Jersey and Plano, Texas. Toni received further awards thanks to his unique style of leadership, including a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ from the Fellowship of British Hairdressing.

Toni Mascolo departed us last year. But, his impact and legacy has and will never fail to keep his name alive for centuries to come. His family commented, “It is with deep sorrow that the family announce the passing of founder, leader, husband, and father, Giuseppe Toni Mascolo”. Toni was surrounded by his family at the time of his death.

Toni Mascolo was highly respected within the hairdressing community, he was known as approachable and someone who made time for everyone. It is no surprise that he built up a lengthy list of achievements, which transcended the industry to include business, entrepreneurship and charity. He along with his wife Pauline started the TONI&GUY Charitable Foundation in 2003, which has raised more than £2,014,735 for a variety of causes and organisations. But it wasn’t all about hair, Toni was an avid supporter of Chelsea Football Club, and launched or has been involved with, several independent projects such as coffee shops, property, and most recently his very own pasta sauce. Toni is survived by his wife Pauline, brothers Bruno and Anthony and his children Sacha, Christian and Pierre and his many grandchildren.

‘The Future of the Brand’
With an eye firmly on the future, TONI&GUY continues to take on exciting new challenges and collaborations. 2013 saw label.m receive the ultimate seal of fashion approval, as the range became the ‘Official Haircare product of London Fashion Week’ – a landmark move for the British fashion council and a first for the hairdressing industry. This plus numerous collaborations with key British design talent reinforces TONI&GUY’s position as the fashion-led hairdresser.
